Food for Haiti

In a country that was already devastatingly poor and food security and access to clean water at the top of its concerns, it’s hard to imagine how it can get any worse.  But in the wake of Haiti’s earthquake, the UN World Food Programme estimated that 3 million people, mostly in the nation’s capital, are in dire need of assistance, and feeding those left homeless from the situation remains a pressing concern.

So what can we do to help?

Here are a few ideas:

Corby Kummer of the Atlantic reports on some notable organizations providing food (two I’ve outlined below) in his recent blog post, and former President Clinton put out an appeal yesterday on NPR for cash donations, suggesting that even $5 or $10 adds up and makes a huge difference.

The Feed Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to providing school meals to children of the developing world, has established a FEED Haiti fund to maintain WPF School Feeding during this time.

Food for the Poor, one of the largest relief organization in the US, and already working inside the country, is accepting food donations as well as cash donations (click here to donate).

Donate on line at the Clinton Foundation to help provide immediate relief (or text “haiti” at 20222 to donate $10).

If you are looking for something closer to home, I’ll be participating in Bakesale for Haiti next Saturday, January 23rd from 10am to 2pm. It will happen at THREE locations: Pizzaiolo in Oakland, Gioia in No. Berkeley, and Bi-Rite Market in the Mission; all funds will be donated to Partner’s in Health.

Come share in the goodness of community and help spread love and relief to Haiti.

  1. Nani, bravo for using your skills to raise money and awareness for a country that has endured poverty and political abuse for centuries.
It was also dedicated to dark voodoo powers by their leadership, and the people were doubly oppressed. John and I lived in the Dominican Republic next door, and the atmospheric contrast between the two countries was extreme.
This seems to be the hour of greatest need and greatest liberation!
America the blessed has opened her heart once again.
    Love, Mary

I live very south of Berkeley in San Diego. But thank you. I wish I could be up there to support your efforts. UCSD where I work took quick action for donations – the students were very proactive to help this unspeakable situation. I worked with survivors of Katrina when we had evacuees here. It is a very moving experience on so many levels when you have time to look back.
